Waking up in London

Four tasty ways to cure what went on the night before

Here at the Inquirer, we know that sometimes nights out in London can get a bit heavy. We also know that there’s nothing as dissatisfying as munching on a soggy bowl of own-brand Cornflakes when you’re nursing a hangover.

So right now, and just for you, we’re dishing up four of the choicest, juciest cuts for breakfast. You can thank us later.

Tucked away neatly at the end of Exmouth Market you’ll find our first eatery of choice – Caravan.

Just a short walk down the side of City’s social science building, you’ll find just about the classiest breakfasts you could ever imagine.

“Would you like sourdough or grain bread with that, sir?”  Phwoar.

The poached eggs that are served here are second to none, and the quality of bacon is incredibly, succulently, mouth-wateringly high. Our favourite is the Caravan fry-up, which takes that wonder-bacon, partners it with some eggs (classic) on a plate next to creamy soy-mushrooms and slow-roasted tomatoes.

Make sure you come here soon after pay-day, as the caravan fry-up will set you back a whopping £8.50.  Worth every penny, mind.

Caravan can be found at 11-13 Exmouth Market, EC1R 4QE.

If you like animals and breakfast then  here’s a place where the two are rolled into one – without the awkward ‘pig’ and ‘sausage’ conversation…

Perfect for pretending to escape the city, if just for a little while, Frizzante cafe in Hackney City Farm nestles the country-life  comforts into the bustling London borough.

Why not take a young family member, or an easily-pleased friend  along?

On more than one occasion our editor has expressed his amazement at the size of the pigs.

You can enjoy a fresh breakfast from their cafe with seasonal ingredients handpicked from round the back, while the ones with a bit more energy can be entertained by chasing a few chickens. Everyone’s a winner!

How about a bit of breakfast, French-style?  If the weather’s good enough, have breakfast al fresco in their back garden.

With its intimate feel and romantic decor, it might be worth popping in after a walk of shame, just so that you can regain a bit of class and dignity.

We whole-heartedly (and without judgement) recommend the croque monsieur – a cheese and ham toastie topped with an egg, however he or she likes it.

For those of you interested in something different – Breakfast Club serves up natural light filtering through the ceilings and some fairy lights to make you feel relaxed and at home, alongside a cracking Spanish-style breakfast.

If you leave London without trying their Huevos Rancheros (fried egg on a tortilla with spicy dressings), you’ll have missed something magical.

Bursting at the seams with fried eggs, tortilla pieces, refried beans, chorizo, salsa, sour cream and guacamole, a plate of that will certainly be enough to satisfy the hungriest of breakfast-goers, with the dirtiest of hangover cravings.

You’ll never have a McDonald’s breakfast again.
