Clubbing vs Purer Pursuits

A booze-free night doesn’t have to mean a fun-free night

The Joys of Clubbing
Drinking is a common part of life in London, and is especially common for a fresher but that doesn’t necessarily have to mean it’s the end of your liver.

There are plenty of ways to have fun without needing to drink alcohol and we’re not talking about indulging in “Illegal” substances either.

London boasts a great comedy scene, with its heart at Leicester Square but Londoners can easily find a laugh all over this comedy capital.

At Comedy Café near Old Street there are two free nights a week where established comedians try out new material and new comedians just try their luck.

The most famous comedy club is Comedy Store, located between Leicester Square and Piccadilly Circus. Even with the generous £5 student discount, the price for one ticket is still £12. However, it’s definitely worth it.

At the Comedy Store you don’t have to worry about nervous stand-up beginners; you can comfortably sit down, relax and just laugh. This might result in a bit of a painful abdominal ache but at least it gives the liver some peace for a few hours.

If you fancy a more sporting activity then head to All Star Lanes in Holborn, Bayswater or Brick Lane. In this very American bowling diner it feels like you’ve ended up in the middle of the sitcom That 70s Show but with the difference that the laughs you will have aren’t pre-recorded.

If you’re more into golf there are indoor urban golf venues to visit in Smithfield, Kensington and Soho.

Apart from golf there are many other sports to do in London so pick your favourite and start your Freshers’ Week evening with some games.

Although you might not be the winner of drinking games and drunken dares, once you suggest a few of these nights out to your new friends you’ll soon get the fresher respect you deserve.
